EFFECT OF HIGH WORK LOAD ON MANAGERS PEFORMANCE IN THE OIL AND GAS SECTOR: A FOCUS ON SELECTED MULTINATIONAL COMPANIES IN RIVERS STATE, NIGERIA

This study investigated the relationship between high workload and managers’ performance in the oil and gas sector with a view to understanding the degree of relationship and influencehigh workloadas a stress factor has on performance of managers. A descriptive survey design was adopted from a population of six hundred (600) managers drawn from eight oil and gas companies in Rivers State. A sample size of 198 was determined using the Taro Yamane formula. Univariate statistics and Pearson Product Moment Correlation were used to analyse data and test the hypotheses formulated. The study found that high workload has a negative and significant effect on managers’ performance, looking at goal incongruence, role conflict, divided loyalty, multiple responsibilities, time pressure on individual’s personality and the job environment were indicators of stressful conditions for managers in the oil and gas sector. Thus, companies should pay attention to managers’high workload in other to improve their work performance and reduce emotional and work stress.
